Untitled - Please Draw Something

01/05/15 - 01/06/15 CHART Plymouth

This piece is an exploration of identity through the use of subconscious mark making, scribbling and doodles. The free intuitive marks are a representation of the single person who made them within the whole collaborative piece. This is a time based/ durational piece as it only allowed people to contribute to it while the show was open and being visited. When the exhibition is over, the end product could be considered a group identity or representatiton of all of the participants who visited the show, whether their contribution was great or small.

This work is highly influenced by Art Psychotherapy practices along with the creation of collaborative / relational artwork, through the use of interactive pieces like this and other workshops. I was loosely influenced by the work of Gillian Wearing and her 'Signs that say what you want them to say not signs that say what someone else wants you to say' piece. Location and perception of the work are very important to this piece, as its aim is to engage the viewer not only with the piece, but their surroundings and the rest of the audience as well.

This piece was a more restricting version of the previous piece which asked the audeince to 'Please Draw in a Box' rather than drawing anything, anywhere they wished. The audience could still pick anywhere on the paper, but all of the boxes were the same size not giving them the initial freedom they would have previously had on the blank paper. I was interested to see how the audience reacted to the restricted space and if they would go with it or rebel against it.
